  Modified struct vnode to include a struct lock, and add genfs_lock(), genfs_unlock(), and genfs_islocked() operations. All leaf fs's other than nfs now use lock manager locks to protect internal data, including kernfs, fdescfs, portalfs, and procfs. Leaf fs's now store the address of their struct lock in v_vnlock. A value of NULL indicates that the fs does not use the lock manager. Layered fs's directly lock and unlock the struct lock referenced in v_vnlock, if non- null. nfs exports a NULL as it does no locking at present, and unionfs exports a NULL as its locking is more complex than locking a single struct lock.
